The present investigation examined the idea that people with Personality Disordes (PD) doesn’t see himself as others see them. This study compared correlations of the different scales of Adjective Check List (ACL) between self-description and hetero-description in 21 PD patients and 22 patients of group control (with other disorders than depression or psychosis). PD patients showed a greater significant correlation between self and hetero-description than the controls. These findings suggest that PD. patients gess more accurately the perceptions that others make about themselves. Some desiderata for future research on these findings are raised.
- ItemPsychological aspects of pre-symptomatic testing for Machado–Joseph disease and familial amyloid polyneuropathy type I(Clin Genet, 2006) Rolim, Luísa; Leite, Ângela; Lêdo, S.; Paneque, M.; Sequeiros, J.; Fleming, ManuelaMachado–Joseph disease [MJD, also spinocerebellar ataxia type 3 (SCA3)] and familial amyloid polyneuropathy type I (FAP-I or ATTR V30M) are neurodegenerative disorders, inherited in an autosomal dominant fashion, which have a high prevalence in Portugal, probably due to a founder effect. MJD and FAP-I are late-onset diseases, with symptoms emerging usually during adulthood. CGPP, which is the national reference centre for these disorders, has a genetic lab that offers diagnostic, pre-symptomatic and prenatal testing and an outpatient clinic to counsel and follow relatives at risk for hereditary ataxias, FAP- I and Huntington disease (HD). The present work is a review of our 10- year experience with psychological counselling of individuals at risk for MJD and FAP-I. Persons at risk for FAP-I may show a better response to pre-symptomatic testing than those who are at risk for MJD and HD because of the availability of liver transplantation, which may improve their health and life expectancy. Psychological well-being and specific distress of MJD and FAP-I test applicants, before undergoing genetic testing (baseline level) and 3 to 6 months after disclosure of test results, have shown a low level of change, both in identified carriers and non-carriers. A major goal of psychological characterization of at-risk individuals for MJD and FAP-I is to determine the factors that influence the uptake of genetic testing.
- ItemDissociative disorders and other psychopathological groups: exploring the differences through the Somatoform Dissociation Questionnaire (SDQ-20)(Revista Brasileira de Psiquiatria, 2006) Espirito-Santo, Helena; Pio-Abreu, José LuísThe Somatoform Dissociation Questionnaire is a self-report questionnaire that has proven to be a reliable and valid instrument. The objectives of this study were to validate the Portuguese version and to determine its capability to distinguish patients with dissociative disorders from others with psychopathological disorders. Method: 234 patients answered the translated version of Somatoform Dissociation Questionnaire. The Portuguese Dissociative Disorders Interview Schedule was used to validate clinical diagnosis. Patients with dissociative disorder (n = 113) were compared to a control group of 121 patients with various anxiety and depression disorders. Results: Reliability measured by Cronbach’s α was 0.88. The best performance of the Portuguese form was at a cut-off point of 35, which distinguishes between dissociative disorder and neurotic disorders with a good diagnostic efficacy (sensitivity = 0.73). The somatoform dissociation was significantly more frequent in dissociative disorder patients, conversion disorder patients and post-traumatic stress disorder patients. Conclusions: These findings suggest that dissociative disorders can be differentiated from other psychiatric disorders through somatoform dissociation. The Portuguese version of the Somatoform Dissociation Questionnaire has fine psychometric features that sustain its cross-cultural validity.
- ItemThe Perceived Advantages and Disadvantages of Presymptomatic Testing for Machado-Joseph Disease: Development of a New Self-Response Inventory(Journal of Genetic Counseling, 2006) Rolim, Luísa; Zagalo-Cardoso, José A.; Paúl, Constança; Sequeiros, Jorge; Fleming, ManuelaThis study describes the construction of a self-response inventory to evaluate the perception of advantages and disadvantages of the Machado-Joseph disease presymptomatic testing, in 44 individuals at-risk for this disease. The results showed that the reliability of this inventory was satisfactory. Factor analysis revealed a bidimensional structure: perceived advantages (pros) and perceived disadvantages (cons) of presymptomatic testing. Social desirability was found unrelated to the total scores of our inventory. Additional correlation studies, with other scales, confirmed the convergent validity of the instrument. These results suggest adequate construct validity. This inventory thus seems to be a proper instrument to assess expectations involved in the decision-making process of Machado-Joseph disease presymptomatic testing.
As características psicométricas auguram validade e fidedignidade promissoras.

- ItemDemographic and Mental Health Factors Associated with Pathological Dissociation in a Portuguese Sample(Journal of Trauma & Dissociation, 2008) Espirito-Santo, Helena; Pio-Abreu, José LuísPathological dissociation has been extensively studied in many countries; however, little is known about it in Portugal. This research examined the role of demographic variables and mental health on dissociation in Portugal. We assessed 505 participants from 6 samples consisting of dissociative patients (n = 37), conversive patients (n = 26), somaticizing patients (n = 59), posttraumatic stress disorder patients (n = 50), other psy- chiatric patients (n = 174), and nonclinical subjects (n = 159). Dissociation was measured by Portuguese versions of the Dissociative Experiences Scale and Somatoform Dissociation Questionnaire; the LEAD procedure and subscales of the Brief Symptom Inventory indicated mental health. Pathological psychological dissociation was significantly more frequent in women, in the youngest of the participants, and in those with less education. Multiple logistic regression revealed that psychoticism, paranoid ideation, and depression symptoms made both men and women more vulnerable to psychological dissociation. Furthermore, psychological dissociation was more probable in men having symptoms of obsession and paranoid ideation and in women having symptoms of psychoticism and paranoid ideation. Pathological somatoform dissociation was significantly more probable in women with less education. Moreover, somatoform dissociation was more likely in women with somatization symptoms and more likely in men with symptoms of somatization and psychoticism. Even though significant associations were found, causal relations could not be established because the study was cross-sectional.
- ItemClinical and Psychometric Validation of the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) for Portuguese Elders(Clinical Gerontologist, 2009) Pocinho, Margarida; Farate, Carlos; Amaral Dias, Carlos; Lee, Tina T.; Yesavage, Jerome A.The main purpose of this study is the adaptation and psychometric validation of the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) for the Portuguese population. The analyses of temporal (a (27 items) = .995) and internal (.91) consistencies, inter-rater reliability (Kappa = .87), and concur- rent (.83) and factorial (3 factor) validities demonstrate that GDS is highly reliable as a screening instrument for geriatric depression. This conclusion was further validated by both discriminant function analysis and diagnostic value testing, which showed a sensitivity of 100%, a specificity of 83%, a positive predictive value of 93%, and a negative predictive value of 100%. The study has also evaluated GDS applicability to clinical assessment and therapeutic intervention with elders suffering from moderate feelings of loneliness linked to recurring suicidal ideation.
- ItemPortuguese Validation of the Dissociative Experiences Scale (DES)(Journal of Trauma & Dissociation, 2009) Espirito-Santo, Helena; Pio-Abreu, José LuísObjective: The Dissociative Experiences Scale (DES) is a widely used screening tool for dissociative symptoms. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the validity and internal consistency of a Portuguese version and determine if it accurately identified dissociative pathology. Method: The original DES underwent a “forward–backward” translation process. The translated form was used on 570 participants divided into 3 subgroups: 113 patients with dissociative symptoms, 233 psychiatric patients with various psychopathological disorders, and 224 normal individuals. Results: A principal components analysis with all of the participants yielded 4 factors that accounted for 56.3% of the variance. Reliability as measured by Cronbach’s alpha was .94. The receiver operating characteristic curve applied to the cutoff analysis revealed a value of 30 comparing the 2 clinical groups and contrasting the dissociative-based group with the nonclinical group. The ability of the DES to correctly classify those with and without the disease was very good. Sensitivity was 65.0% and specificity was 86.0% with the cutoff score of 30 from the comparison between dissociative symptomatic disorders and the other psychopathological disorders. Comparing the dissociative symptomatic group with the nonclinical group, we found that sensitivity was 65.0% and specificity was 100%. The mean DES scores for the 3 subgroups were significantly different. Conclusion: These findings are in some degree analogous to those in other studies and suggest that the DES is a reliable and valid screen for the Portuguese population.
- ItemPsychiatric Symptoms and Dissociation in Conversion, Somatization and Dissociative Disorders(Australian and New Zealand Journal of Psychiatry, 2009-03-01) Espirito-Santo, Helena; Pio-Abreu, José LuísObjective: Conversion, dissociation and somatization are historically related in the long established concept of hysteria. Somewhere along the way they were separated due to the Cartesian dualistic view. The aim of the present study was to compare these pathologies and investigate whether symptoms of these pathologies overlap in their clinical appearance in a Portuguese sample. Method: Twenty-six patients with conversion disorder, 38 with dissociative disorders, 40 with somatization disorder, and a comparison group of 46 patients having other psychiatric disorders answered questions about dissociation (Dissociative Experiences Scale), somatoform dissociation (Somatoform Dissociation Questionnaire), and psychopathological symptoms (Brief Symptom Inventory). Results: Dissociative and somatoform symptoms were significantly more frequent in dissociative and conversion disorder than in somatization disorder and controls. There were no significant differences between dissociative and conversion patients. Conclusions: Conversion disorder is closely related to dissociative disorders. These results support the ICD-10 categorization of conversion disorder among dissociative disorders and the hypothesis of analogous psychopathological processes in conversion and dissociative disorders versus somatization disorder.
- ItemRepercussions of tobacco, alcohol and drugs on adolescents' health. Modalities of interaction and reciprocal influence(LAP Lambert Academic Publishin, 2010) Farate, Carlos; Pocinho, Margarida; Machado, PauloAttachment has often been identified as key-variable for the understanding of developmental vulnerability to health risk behaviours among children and adolescents. On the other hand the association of a past history of somatic illness to later involvement in health risk behaviours is an increasingly relevant public health issue. This study was aimed at determining the influence of both somatic antecedents and attachment style on substance use behaviours among 15-18 year-olds. It further tested the empirical validity of a mediator model to explain the role of adolescents' attachment behaviour on the interaction between somatic antecedents and substance use. To achieve such goals an epidemiological survey was conducted on a panel sample of children and adolescents randomly selected from the population of the same age consulting at Coimbra Health Sub-region primary care services. Even if the probabilistic validity of the mediator model was not proven, the parental perception of insecure (anxious/avoidant) attachment, particularly among youngsters with significant past history of somatic disorders, proved to be a key risk factor for adolescent involvement in substance use behaviours.
- ItemPsychological Aspects in Couples with Infertility(Sexologies, 2011) Galhardo, Ana; Cunha, Marina; Pinto-Gouveia, JoséThe aim of this study is to characterize subjects with a diagnosis of infertility in terms of individual psychological functioning and marital adjustment. Eighty normal control couples without known fertility problems (NC), 80 couples with an infertility diagnosis pursuing medical treatment (IG) and 40 couples with an infertility diagnosis who are adoption candidates (AG) completed the instruments: Beck Depression Inventory, Coping Styles Questionnaire, Others As Shamer, Experience of Shame Scale, Acceptance and Action Questionnaire, Self-Compassion Scale, Intimacy Dimensions, Female Sexual Function Index, International Index of Erectile Function, and Dyadic Adjustment Scale. Results show that the IG scored higher than NC and AG in measures of depression, external and internal shame. IG presented higher scores in avoidant and emotional coping styles whereas AG showed higher detached and rational coping. In what concerns acceptance and self-compassion, IG showed lower scores. IG scored higher on intimacy than normal controls. Dyadic adjustment was higher in the AG. These couples scored higher than NC but no differences were found between them and IG. No differences between the groups were found in terms of sexual functioning. Subjects with an infertility diagnosis showed significant higher scores in psychopathological measures and significant lower scores in more positive/protective psychological functioning measures. Infertility subjects presented higher scores than normal controls in intimacy, which suggest that infertility may function as a couples’ cohesion factor (e.g. during medical treatment). Contrary to what is mentioned in literature, there were no significant differences in sexual functioning between groups.
