Preditores Psicossociais e Sociodemográficos da Autoestima em Homens que Fazem Sexo com Homens: um estudo transversal em Porto Alegre, Brasil

| dc.description.abstract | Contexto e Objetivo: O presente estudo transversal teve como objetivo examinar a associação entre autoestima e indicadores psicossociais — saúde mental, apoio social autopercebido e clima familiar — em homens que fazem sexo com homens (HSH). Método: Participaram 246 homens adultos (Midade = 27,78; DP = 8,23; amplitude 18–60 anos), recrutados por amostragem de conveniência em um Centro de Testagem e Aconselhamento em Porto Alegre, Brasil, no contexto da testagem rápida de HIV e outras infecções sexualmente transmissíveis. Os participantes responderam à Escala de Autoestima de Rosenberg, ao Questionário Geral de Saúde de Goldberg (GHQ-12), à Escala de Apoio Social do Medical Outcomes Study (MOS-SSS) e ao Inventário do Clima Familiar (ICF). Foram realizadas análises descritivas, correlações de Spearman e regressão linear múltipla. Resultados: O modelo de regressão explicou 50,3% da variância da autoestima. Pontuações mais elevadas no GHQ-12, indicativas de pior saúde mental, associaram-se a menor autoestima (β = −0,58; p < 0,001), enquanto maior apoio social emocional (β = 0,20; p < 0,001), maior idade (β = 0,13; p = 0,018) e mais escolaridade (β = 0,13; p = 0,018) se associaram a maior autoestima. Conclusões: Os achados destacam a relevância da saúde mental e do apoio social emocional enquanto recursos psicossociais associados à autoestima em HSH e sustentam o desenvolvimento de intervenções psicossociais que promovam redes de suporte afetivo e emocional, com particular atenção aos homens mais jovens. | Background and Objective: The present cross-sectional study aimed to examine the association between self-esteem and psychosocial indicators — mental health, perceived social support, and family climate — among men who have sex with men (MSM). Method: A total of 246 adult men (Mage = 27.78; SD = 8.23; range: 18–60 years) were recruited by convenience sampling at a Counseling and Testing Center in Porto Alegre, Brazil, in the context of rapid testing for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections. Participants completed the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12), the Medical Outcomes Study Social Support Survey (MOS-SSS), and the Family Climate Inventory (FCI). Descriptive analyses, Spearman correlations, and multiple linear regression were conducted. Results: The regression model accounted for 50.3% of the variance in self-esteem. Higher GHQ12 scores, indicative of poorer mental health, were associated with lower self-esteem (β = −.58, p < .001), whereas higher emotional social support (β = .20, p < .001), older age (β = .13, p = .018), and higher educational attainment (β = .13, p = .018) were associated with higher self-esteem. Conclusions: Findings underscore the relevance of mental health and emotional social support as psychosocial resources associated with self-esteem among MSM and support the development of psychosocial interventions that strengthen affective and emotional support networks, with particular attention to younger men. | |
